Acne, the Youth and the New

Despite the fact that beauty is a relative value, that is, it varies from culture to culture, period to period and even from person to person, it is still fundamental concern for many individuals. And despite the common sensical knowledge that beauty is but a superficial feature of desirability, this has not prohibited individuals from spending significant financial resources, time and even social judgement in attempts to be physically beautiful.

Understandably, physical beauty is a basic criteria for social acceptability, if not normalcy which is why people take extra measures to ‘fit’ in and even so ‘stand-out’. And of course, there is the matter of growing affordability and accessibility of cosmetic procedures that have allowed virtually anybody the chance to be more beautiful in relatively cheap and easy ways. As technological developments and medical breakthroughs have made desirability a reasonable commodity, people have in a way believed more strongly that physical embellishments can be corrected. And why not, the factors that make a person physically unattractive, except perhaps for ageing, can now be addressed by the sophisticated evolution of science and technology.

The Acne Scare

Across the globe, acne is one of the leading and pervasive beauty problems. It is a common and dreaded universal disease of the skin that can afflict anybody regardless of race, gender, age and family history. Scientifically known as acne vulgaris, acne is occurs when hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells and oil from skin and causes a variety of imperfections and blemishes like pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, oily skin and even scarring. The disorder affects areas are face, neck, shoulders, upper arms, and chest and back which parts of the skin with relatively high number of oil glands.

While prevalent across different demographic, young adults are more likely than most to be stricken by acne and are arguably the most affected ones. Physically, acne linked to increase in production of hormones such as testosterone and oestrogen, which is usually common during adolescence. Study shows that 3 in every 4 people aged 11 to 30 years are stricken by the disease. Among other age groups, emotional stress, menstruation and greasy cosmetics can also cause acne and again, these factors are common among the youth who deal with hormonal changes. And since it happens during puberty when teenagers are most conscious of physical appearance, young adults are more psychologically affected by the effects of any physical deformity or imperfections. In other words, since young adults are more prone to physical insecurities, they are more affected by acne which can result to loss of confidence, insecurity complex even outright depression.

The Acne Solution

Since acne strikes different groups, they also vary in severity. As such, in Singapore, acne laser treatment differs based on degree of the problem. In Singapore, mild cases are commonly addressed by over-the-counter medications such as soaps, creams, pads and lotions can be applied to the skin and help treat the disease. However, for more severe cases, such as when there are nodules or painful bumps under the skin, Singapore acne scars treatment require services of cosmetic clinics that provide more drastic procedures like dermatological treatments against scarring which include removal of undesirable marks on the body.

And again, due to technological developments and medical breakthroughs, acne scar laser treatment in Singapore, using cutting edge laser technology in dermatology procedures including acne scar removal, have also become a very common and inexpensive acne treatment alternative in Singapore. Recently, thermage skin tightening treatment, a very recent type of advanced technological procedure that uses heat to tighten underlying layers of the skin and produces instant and visible reduction of wrinkles, jowls, and sagging skin in the neck or brow area is also becoming attractive due to scientific evidence that it is safer, faster and more effective not just in scar removal but in skin tightening as well. But as a relatively new technology compared to laser treatments which has been around for a while, thermage skin tightening is still very costly and is therefore not advisable when treating only minor skin imperfections.
